Warning to Property Owners Going Through Tax Lien Sale

Are you a property owner going through a tax lien sale; in the treasurer’s deed process; or currently in foreclosure?

If so, the Alamosa County Treasurer and Public Trustee, Amy McKinley , urges you to contact her directly with questions or concerns, especially if you have been contacted by individuals or companies offering to “help,” “solve,” or “take over” your property.  “These solicitations intentionally target property owners going through a measure of stress from their circumstances and solicitors often pressure owners into transferring property without the property owners fully understanding the legal or financial consequences,” said McKinley. “Please start with us,” McKinley said.  “We have access to your official records and can help you with timelines, requirements, and options – and are your no-cost, trusted and most accurate source of information if your property is involved in these processes,” she said.  Treasurer McKinley offers the following key guidance for property owners:

  • If your property has been part of a tax lien sale or is in the treasurer’s deed process, contact the Treasurer and Public Trustee first.
  •  If you are in foreclosure, we can help you understand your status and rights.
  • NEVER transfer ownership without consulting a reputable title company or attorney.
  • We provide information, guidance and answers at no cost.

“Our goal is to protect property owners,” added McKinley. “When in doubt, call us. Even a five-minute conversation can prevent serious problems later.”
